2 days after Iran's large scale strikes at Israeli targets the media landscape is trying to make sense of what happened. It is not all-out war, but it was the most forceful proof of Iranian Power to date. What was the message? In the following, I'll go through some reports to try to make sense of the situation.

Ishiba Shigeru is the new Prime Minister of Japan, and he has some very unconventional ideas that the US cannot be very happy about. While superficially, his policies might look "trans-atlantic" he in fact outlined a vision toward Japan's strategic autonomy. He goes as far as to strive for Japanese Military Bases on US territories! He does so all while coushoning this words and goals in the well-known rhetoric of "strengthening" the alliance and building up deterrence against China. But looking at his most recent speeches and publications, it's clear that this PM is not on board with simply being an "unsinkable aircraft carrier" to the USA. This will be interesting.

Well, he's right about that one. The First Amendment of the US constitution is indeed a standing in the way of people like him who would like to control speech on the internet and in all corners of social live from becoming reality. The amendment was passed to stop wanna-be autocrats like him from ever do parental control on the media landscape of adult citizens.

Even the fear of nuclear weapons use seems to be a negligible factor. And then there is the 'Putin is Hitler' argument, which has particularly gained significant traction in Germany. Fortunately, opinion polls (https://de.statista.com/statistik/daten/studie/1312216/umfrage/umfrage-deutsche-ukraine-politik/) show that a good portion of Germans are much more cautious than the mainstream might lead one to believe and wish for a de-escalation of the Ukraine war. And yet, there is still a significant portion of the population that even supports the firing of long-range missiles into Russia. Where does this come from? What drives people into an inner war mentality, especially in Germany, which has experienced and been responsible for war so often? It is absolutely clear that for all powers in the neighbourhood, a workable relationship with Russia is essential. Ambassador Matlock discusses the reasons for the instability, the domestic and international factors, and gives invaluable advice on how to do conflict resolution instead of conflict escalation. Among many other achievements and postings, Ambassador Matlock served as the United States top diplomat to the Soviet Union from 1987–1991, with his duties in Moscow ending only months before the dissolution of the country itself. He was famously working with President Reagan and Bush Senior to end the Cold War, which he keeps emphasising happened due to mutual agreement and good diplomacy, not because of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
