Claudia Leconte is the author of “France in the Mirror of Madagascar: Liberty, Equality, Fihavanana.” Using the example of Madagascar and France, she shows that at the root of today’s European politics still lie the colonial past and the neocolonial mindset of the present. Without a true reconciliation with the wounds caused by colonialism, no healing is possible—even within Europe itself—and the madness of ever-renewed violence toward the outside will continue. Europe must begin to heal, both from within and from without, and finally confront its colonialist roots.
